Local SEO in Houston is the work of ranking a business in the Google Maps top 3 across the part of a 640-square-mile city it can really serve. It is for Houston-area service companies, practices and shops with a verified Google Business Profile that want more calls from their side of town and the suburbs next to it.
Size, and the way the city is built. Houston has 2,397,315 residents on 640 square miles (U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts). Harris County has 5,045,026 (QuickFacts for Harris County). No single address covers that.
Four local facts matter most:
A few miles in the core, and more on the edges. Google ranks local results partly by distance from the searcher. Inside the Loop, where businesses are packed in, the top-3 area around one address is small. Out past Beltway 8, with more space between competitors, one address can reach farther.
A Houston business should plan around its ring. A plumber based in Katy can aim for the west side from the Grand Parkway in toward Beltway 8. Ranking in Pasadena or Kingwood from Katy is not a realistic map pack goal. That is the far side of the metro.
The Local SEO program tracks keywords on a 5-mile community grid or a 10-mile city grid. Most Houston service companies need the 10-mile grid, and even that covers one slice of the metro. Our guide to grid rank scans vs. zip code ranking explains how to read the result.
The ones in your ring. Suburb searches are large enough to justify a page each.

Those three suburbs together get 1,150 dentist searches a month, close to Houston's 1,300. A practice in Sugar Land should lead with Sugar Land, not Houston.
Other areas to consider by direction: Cypress, Spring and Tomball to the northwest and north, Pearland and Clear Lake to the south, Pasadena to the southeast. Inside the Loop, use neighborhood names such as the Heights, Montrose and Midtown. Our article on service area landing pages covers what each page needs.

Three things stand out.
Legal is the most contested category. "Personal injury lawyer Houston" gets more searches than AC repair, plumbing and dentists combined. A small firm will not win that term on the map across the city. It can win its own area and its narrower practice terms.
Air conditioning is a year-round trade here. "AC repair Houston" matches plumbing at 1,500 searches a month.
Spanish-language searches are real. "Abogados en Houston" gets 350 searches a month. A firm with Spanish-speaking staff should have a Spanish page and list the language on its profile.
Storm work comes in bursts. Hurricane Harvey caused up to $125 billion in damage in 2017, with more than 50 inches of rain in places, per the Houston source above. Roofers and restoration companies that rank before a storm get the calls after it.
The Texas Medical Center employs more than 120,000 people, so medical and dental practices near it compete with large institutions for the same searches.

"Best dentist in Houston" gets nearly half the searches of "dentist Houston" itself, at 600 against 1,300. Houston patients compare before they book, so a practice needs proof on its own pages: credentials, reviews and photos. AC companies should put their Texas license number where a customer who runs that lookup can match it. "TDLR license search" is the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation lookup, which people use to check a contractor's license before they hire.
Ask them by side of town. Type "who is a good AC company in Katy" or "best dentist in the Heights" into ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers, in English and in Spanish, and write down which businesses appear. The AI visibility self-test has the steps, and AEO | GEO services covers what follows.
Houston has no industry pages yet, so these go to our Texas pages. Legal is the most searched category in the city, and AC repair is year-round work.

No. The city covers 640 square miles, and distance is part of how Google ranks local results. Plan for your side of town, then add area pages, ads or a second location for the rest.
Target the place in your address first. Suburbs such as Katy and Sugar Land have their own searches, and a business there will rank better for its suburb than for Houston.
It helps if your staff serves customers in Spanish. 47.1% of residents speak a language other than English at home, and Spanish searches such as "abogados en Houston" get hundreds of searches a month.
A 10-mile city grid fits most service companies. Dense areas inside the Loop can start with a 5-mile grid.
First movement on a map grid usually shows in 1 to 3 weeks, and the top 3 on competitive terms usually takes 30 to 90 days. Legal and home service terms in Houston sit at the long end.
Yes. Local SEO earns the map pack on your side of town. SEO adds pages that rank in the standard results for suburbs and questions across a city of 640 square miles, where no single address reaches on the map.
Start with the Google Business Profile and a 10-mile grid scan of your ring. Then add pages for the suburbs next to you, and use content and ads for areas farther out.
