Digital marketing for tour operators

Quick summary: This page is for small tour, guide, charter and activity companies that want more bookings on their own website and fewer through resellers. It leads to four services: local SEO, SEO, AEO | GEO and SEO content. Pick the one that matches where your guests look for you, or read the starting points below.

How do travelers find a tour today?

Most of your guests do not live near you. They plan from another city, then search again after they arrive. That splits the job across three parts of the results page.

  • Planning searches are far larger than tour searches. "Things to do in Moab" gets about 4,700 searches a month in the United States, and "Moab jeep tours" gets about 250, according to Ahrefs Keywords Explorer. The traveler decides what to do before they decide who to book.
  • Parks send the demand. The National Park Service counted 323,014,305 recreation visits in 2025. If you run trips in or near a park, a share of those visitors search for a guide before they leave home.
  • Resellers sit between you and the guest. Viator tells operators it charges a one-time listing fee of $29 and is paid only when it brings a completed booking. Its pages can rank above the operator's own.
  • Google has a direct route. Google's Things to do policies let a tour operator mark its own booking page as operator direct, which separates it from reseller links.

The map pack still matters once the guest is in town. AI answers matter most at the planning stage, when the question is "what should we do there?"

Where should a tour company start?

  1. New business. Verify your Google Business Profile at your real base, connect a booking system, and build one page per tour. The local SEO launch checklist covers the order.
  2. Established but invisible on the map. Start with local SEO. The Local SEO program starts at $850/mo per location and needs a verified profile, at least 10 reviews and a rating of 3.5 stars or better.
  3. Ranking but not converting. If people find you and still book through a reseller, the tour pages and checkout are the problem. Start with SEO and SEO content.

Common questions from tour operators

What is the first thing a tour operator should fix?

Your Google Business Profile and a separate page for each tour. Those two things feed the map pack, the organic results and AI answers at the same time.

Should a tour operator leave Viator and GetYourGuide?

Usually not. The aim is to add direct bookings while resellers keep reaching travelers you would not reach alone.

Does Galli Local work with tour companies outside Pennsylvania?

Yes, remotely. We are based in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, and map rankings are measured from your address with grid scans, so we do not need to be in your town.

How long before bookings change?

First map grid movement usually shows in 1 to 3 weeks, and SEO content takes 3 to 6 months for steady gains. Start at least three months before your season opens, and know that no one can guarantee a ranking.

Can we buy content on its own?

No. Content comes with the AEO | GEO bundle and the full agency stack, or case by case once a strategy is in place.
