Local SEO for orthopedic practices

Local SEO for orthopedic practices is the work of ranking an orthopedic group in the Google Maps top 3 for the searches patients use when a knee, shoulder, hand or back stops working. It is for independent orthopedic and sports medicine practices with a verified Google Business Profile at a real clinic that want more self-referred patients alongside their physician referrals.

This page covers local SEO for orthopedics: surgeon and clinic profiles, reviews, directories and map grid tracking. The parts shared by every physician practice, such as health directories and privacy rules, are on the medical practices page.

How do patients search for an orthopedic practice?

Patients search for the specialty and for the body part. They rarely search for a procedure plus "surgeon".

orthopedic surgeon near me20,000Has usually been told surgery is possible

knee replacement surgeon near me150Almost nobody searches this way

"Knee doctor near me" gets about 25 times the searches of "knee replacement surgeon near me". Patients do not know they need a replacement when they start. They know their knee hurts. Build pages around the body part and the problem, and let the procedure sit inside them.

Which pages should an orthopedic website have?

One page for each body part the practice treats, one for each surgeon, and one for each clinic location.

A body-part page should cover, in this order:

  1. The problems treated, in patient words: torn meniscus, runner's knee, arthritis
  2. Non-surgical options first, because most visitors are not ready for surgery
  3. The procedures offered, with what recovery involves
  4. Which surgeons treat it, linked to their bio pages
  5. Which locations they see patients at

Steven Galli, Galli Local's founder, ran marketing for an orthopedic practice before working in Stryker's Endoscopy division. Practices tend to organize their websites by surgeon, because that is how the practice thinks about itself, while patients arrive thinking about a joint.

How should surgeon and practice profiles be set up?

Each surgeon should have a claimed profile with a subspecialty category, and the practice profile should carry the broad one. Google's guidelines allow individual practitioner profiles when the practitioner sees patients at that location (Google Business Profile guidelines).

Category names come from a published list of current Business Profile categories (Dalton Luka).

A surgeon who operates at a hospital and sees patients at two clinics should be listed only where patients can book an office visit with them. A profile at the hospital address sends patients to the wrong building.

Profile setup for an orthopedic group: the practice uses Orthopedic clinic, each surgeon uses Orthopedic surgeon or a subspecialty category, and a walk-in injury clinic gets its own profile only if distinct

Is orthopedic urgent care worth a separate listing?

Yes, if it has its own hours, its own entrance or front desk, and walk-in access. Google's guidelines allow a department profile where the department has a distinct name and category from the main practice.

An injury clinic that runs evenings and Saturdays is open when the main clinic is closed. Open hours appear to affect ranking at the time of a search, which gives a walk-in clinic an edge on evening and weekend injury searches.

What does Business Profile management cover for an orthopedic group?

An orthopedic group rarely has one profile. It has one per clinic, one per surgeon, and sometimes a walk-in injury clinic listed as "Urgent care center". Every one of them needs the same fields kept right. With the GBP management bundle, these are set in the first month and checked every month after:

  • Services: each body part and procedure, in patient words: knee pain, rotator cuff repair, carpal tunnel release.
  • Description: the specialty, the clinics, and whether a referral is needed, in the first two sentences.
  • Attributes and links: the accessibility attributes that apply, since many patients arrive on crutches, and an appointment link that opens a request form.
  • Hours: clinic hours on the practice profile and real clinic days on each surgeon profile. A surgeon who operates on Tuesdays should not show as open at the clinic on Tuesdays.
  • Photos: entrance, parking, check-in desk and imaging room. No patient appears without written authorization.
  • Posts: two per location each month, such as a new surgeon or added clinic days.
  • Edit monitoring: when a surgeon leaves or changes clinics, Google and the public suggest edits. Wrong ones are rejected.

How do referrals and search work together?

Many orthopedic patients arrive with a name from their primary care doctor, and then search that name before they call. That search shows the surgeon's profile, star rating and reviews.

Two checks cover it:

  • Search each surgeon's name and city. The claimed profile should appear with the right phone number and clinic.
  • Read the reviews on each surgeon profile, not only the practice profile. A surgeon with four reviews and a 3.2 average loses referred patients nobody knows were lost.

What works for orthopedic reviews?

Ask at the visit where the patient is happiest, which is usually the follow-up when they are cleared to return to work or sport, not the first post-operative visit when they are still in pain.

Replies must never confirm that the reviewer was a patient. In June 2023 a New Jersey practice paid $30,000 to settle with federal regulators over patient details in its review replies (HHS Office for Civil Rights). A reply that says "glad your shoulder is doing well" confirms a patient and a body part. "Thank you for the kind words" does not.

How should the request be worded, and what happens to low ratings?

Keep the request neutral: "Would you share your experience on Google?" Send it by text to every patient, with the link to the profile of the surgeon they saw. Under the program, 1- and 2-star reviews are flagged for removal when they violate Google's policies, such as a review meant for a different practice. A harsh review from a real patient stays up, and the reply names no visit, no joint and no outcome, because HIPAA covers a public reply the same way it covers a chart.

Which directories and ads matter for orthopedics?

  • American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons "Find an orthopaedist" listing, for members
  • Hospital and surgery center physician pages, wherever each surgeon has privileges
  • Insurer provider directories, including workers' compensation networks
  • Healthgrades and Vitals

Orthopedic surgeon is one of the health categories Google lists for Local Services Ads in the United States, with state licenses, malpractice insurance and a National Provider Identifier among the requirements (Google Local Services Help).

Which general listings need to match first?

Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp and the NPI registry come before the specialty directories. Orthopedic groups pick up mismatches when surgeons move between groups or hospital systems, and an old listing keeps a departed surgeon tied to your address. WebMD and Zocdoc profiles are worth claiming for the same reason.

What does map grid tracking show an orthopedic practice?

A map grid lays points across the area around a clinic and records where the profile ranks at each point for one search. The program tracks 10 keywords on a 5-mile community grid or 20 on a 10-mile city grid. An orthopedic clinic usually draws from several towns, so the 10-mile grid is often the better choice.

Split the keyword list by body part, then read the result one term at a time. A common pattern is a strong grid for "orthopedic near me" and an empty one for "hand surgeon near me", which points at a surgeon profile or a missing hand and wrist page, not at the practice profile. The monthly report shows average rank, coverage, top 3 share, calls, website clicks and direction requests. First grid movement tends to show in 1 to 3 weeks, and top 3 on competitive terms in 30 to 90 days. The program also includes local engagement signals on priority keywords, added in tiers as each set reaches the top 3.

Other services for orthopedic practices

Is Galli Local a good fit for your orthopedic practice?

A good fit if you:

  • Are an independent practice or group with one or more clinic locations
  • Have a verified Google Business Profile, at least 10 reviews and a rating of 3.5 stars or better
  • Want more self-referred patients for specific body parts or sports medicine
  • Can get each surgeon to approve changes to their own profile

Not a fit if you:

  • Are a hospital-employed group whose listings are run by the health system
  • Have a suspended profile, which has to be fixed first
  • Want a promised number of surgical cases

The Local SEO program starts at $850/mo per location. See Local SEO services, Packages and the table above for what is included. Galli Local is based in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, works with practices remotely, and is new, so it has no orthopedic client results to show yet. Our guide to optimizing a Google Business Profile covers the basics that apply to every profile. Related pages: physical therapy clinics and dental practices.

Orthopedic local SEO FAQ

Should each orthopedic surgeon have a Google Business Profile?

Yes, if the surgeon sees patients at that clinic. Claim each one, set a subspecialty category where one exists and link it to the surgeon's bio or body-part page.

What should the practice profile's primary category be?

"Orthopedic clinic" fits most group practices. Use "Orthopedic surgeon" on the individual surgeon profiles, so the practice and the surgeons can each appear for different searches.

Do patients search for procedures or for body parts?

Body parts. "Knee doctor near me" gets about 3,800 U.S. searches a month according to Ahrefs, against about 150 for "knee replacement surgeon near me". Pages built around the joint match more searches.

Can a walk-in injury clinic have its own profile?

Yes, if it has a distinct name, its own hours and its own entrance or front desk. If it is only extended hours at the same desk, keep one profile.

When should we ask an orthopedic patient for a review?

Ask at the follow-up visit where the patient is cleared for normal activity. Ask every patient the same way, and do not offer anything in return.
