Who AI tools recommend in State College, PA: a local study

Quick summary: On October 5, 2026, we asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Microsoft Copilot Search the same 10 "who should I hire" questions about State College, PA. The four tools named 83 different businesses, and only 5 were named by all four. This page reports the raw answers for local business owners who want to know how AI tools pick.

What did we find?

• The tools rarely agree. Across the 10 questions there were 88 question-and-business pairings. In 52 of them, or 59%, the business was named by only one tool.
• Five businesses were named by all four tools: JD Law, McClenahen Law Firm, UPMC-GoHealth Urgent Care, Elixr Coffee Roasters, and TCO Fly Shop.
• Another 13 were named by three of the four.
• One question got no AI answer from Google. For "Which HVAC company should I hire in State College, PA?" Google showed a business list and no AI Overview, on two loads.
• Location leaked into one tool. Copilot Search detected that our computer was in Bellefonte and mentioned Bellefonte in four answers.

Being named is a list of who the tools mentioned on one night. It is not a ranking of quality, and we are not recommending any business on this page.

How did we run the study?

1. We wrote 10 questions, two for each of five industries, phrased the way a customer would ask.
2. We ran each question once in each tool on the evening of October 5, 2026, between about 8:45 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Eastern, from a computer in Bellefonte, PA.
3. Every question was asked in a new conversation or a new search, so no answer could build on the one before.
4. We recorded each business the tool named in its answer and the sources it showed.

One change from our plan. We meant to include Perplexity. It would not answer without an account, and so would the Copilot app and Grok. Copilot Search on Bing answered signed out and shows its sources, so we used it as the fourth tool.

Limits. AI answers vary from one session to the next. This is one run of each question on one night, so treat it as a snapshot. A second run would name some different businesses. Urgent care answers were shaped by the hour: at 9 p.m. most clinics were closed and two tools pointed to emergency departments.

Which businesses did each tool name?

Names are listed in the order each tool gave them.

Which sources did each tool cite?

What do the named businesses have in common?

These are patterns in what the tools showed us. They are not proof of what caused a mention.

1. Nearly all of them have a map listing the tool could read. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google showed a place card with a star rating and a business category beside most names. Copilot Search drew on Bing listings in most answers. A business with no listing had little chance of appearing.
2. A high rating was common but not required. The ratings shown on place cards ranged from 2.5 to 5.0. In a category with few providers, such as urgent care, low-rated options were named too.
3. The category matched the question. Most law firms shown for the DUI question carried a criminal defense category. Most plumbers named for the emergency question were described as offering 24-hour service.
4. Each industry had its own outside sources. Lawyers were backed by legal directories: Super Lawyers, Avvo, Justia, Lawyers.com, and Yelp. Coffee shops were backed by local and student media and Reddit. Tours were backed by Tripadvisor. Trades and restaurants were backed mostly by their own websites.
5. The business's own website was cited often. When a tool quoted a detail such as hours, services, or a booking policy, the source was usually the business's site.

The gap between tools is the practical lesson. A business that shows up in one tool is often missing from the other three, so checking a single tool tells you little. Our guide on getting your business named in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews covers the listing and website work behind these patterns, and AEO vs GEO vs SEO explains the terms.

What should a State College business do with this?

• Run your own question. Ask all four tools who to hire for your service in State College and write down who is named.
• Check your listings first. Google Business Profile and Bing Places fed almost every answer here. Our Local SEO services page covers that work.
• Claim the directories your industry's answers cited. The sources table above shows which ones came up.
• Repeat it monthly. One answer is noise. A trend across a fixed list of questions is what AEO | GEO reporting tracks.

Common questions about this study

Which AI tools did the study use?

ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Microsoft Copilot Search. Perplexity was planned but would not answer without an account, so Copilot Search took its place.

Does being named mean a business is the best?

No. The table shows which businesses each tool mentioned on one night. It is not a ranking, a review, or a recommendation from Galli Local.

Would the same questions give the same answers tomorrow?

No. AI answers vary by session, time of day, location, and account. A second run would repeat some names and change others.

Why did Google show no AI Overview for the HVAC question?

We do not know. Google showed a list of local businesses instead, on two separate loads.

How many businesses were named by all four tools?

Five of 83. They were JD Law, McClenahen Law Firm, UPMC-GoHealth Urgent Care, Elixr Coffee Roasters, and TCO Fly Shop.
