Quick summary: Local SEO for plumbers is the work of getting a plumbing company into the three Google Maps listings a homeowner sees when a pipe bursts, a drain backs up or the water heater quits. It is for plumbing companies with a verified Google Business Profile and a real shop or office address that want more calls from the towns they already drive to.
This page covers local SEO for a plumbing company from the profile to the monthly report. The parts shared by every trade are on the home services page.
Most plumbing searches are for a repair that cannot wait, and the searcher calls from the map without visiting a website. The specific-job searches are nearly as large as the general one.
Source: Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, United States, checked October 5, 2026.
Plumbing demand also moves with the weather. A WebFX analysis of Ahrefs data from 2023 and 2024 found that searches for frozen pipe repair rose 609% in January and that emergency plumber searches rose 191% from April to July (WebFX analysis, published by KRDO).
Hours matter because Google appears to favor businesses that are open at the moment of the search. In late 2023 Joy Hawkins of Sterling Sky showed open businesses outranking closed ones on competitive terms, and Google's search liaison said it looked like a local ranking change (BrightLocal).
Set hours to match when a person answers and a truck can roll. If you take calls until 9 p.m. on weekdays, list 9 p.m. If an on-call tech covers nights, 24 hours is accurate. If nights go to voicemail, listing 24 hours gets you the call and then a one-star review.
One address reaches the area around it, and the reach shrinks as competition grows. Google's guidelines tell service-area businesses to hide the address if customers are not served there, and say the service area should not extend farther than about two hours of driving from the base (Google Business Profile guidelines).
The service area you list does not decide where you rank. The map pack is still tied to where the business is located. A plumber based on the east side of a county will usually rank well east and fade to the west, no matter which towns are entered on the profile.
Three things extend your reach without breaking the rules:
Our guide to service area landing pages covers how to write the first one. A rented mailbox or virtual office in the next town is not on the list. It breaks Google's rules and leads to suspensions.
"Plumber" should be the primary category for nearly every plumbing company. Add secondary categories only for work you do every week.
Category names come from a published list of current Business Profile categories (Dalton Luka).
The category table above is the start. The rest of the profile decides which jobs you show up for.
Services. Under "Plumber", list each job as its own service with a one-line description: drain cleaning, sewer line repair, sewer camera inspection, water heater repair, tankless water heater installation, leak detection, sump pump replacement, repiping, garbage disposal replacement, toilet repair. A plumber with "sump pump replacement" listed and a page behind it has a way into that search. One with only "plumbing" does not.
Description. Say what you fix, which towns you drive to, and when a person answers the phone. Add your license or registration number.
Attributes. Fill in the ones Google offers your category, such as whether you give online estimates and whether the business identifies as veteran-owned or women-owned.
Posts. Tie them to what breaks next. Before the first hard freeze, post how to shut off an outside spigot. In spring, post about sump pump checks.
Unwanted edits. Plumbing listings get edited by strangers and by Google. The ones that cost calls are hours changed from open to closed, a hidden address turned back on, and "Plumber" replaced with a narrower category such as "Drainage service". We check for these and reverse them.
Ongoing posting and edit monitoring are part of GBP management, bundled with the Local SEO program.
Google's Local Services Ads sit above the map pack, and plumbing is one of the busiest categories. For plumbers in the United States, Google lists a state-level business and owner license, general liability insurance and, for some advertisers, background checks among its requirements (Google Local Services Help).
Licensing rules differ by state and sometimes by city. In Pennsylvania, anyone doing home improvement work must register with the Attorney General and show the registration number in all advertisements (PA Office of Attorney General). Put the license or registration number in your site footer and your profile description.
Ask for the review before the tech leaves the driveway. The customer has just watched the water come back on. A text with the link, sent from the truck, gets more reviews than an email the next day.
Keep the request short enough for the tech to send while packing up: "Thanks for calling us today. If we did right by you, a Google review helps a small shop a lot. Here is the link." Send it to every customer. Google does not allow asking only the happy ones.
In replies, name the job and the town: "Glad the new water heater is working in Milesburg." Emergency work draws price complaints, because nobody plans for a burst pipe on a Sunday. Say the after-hours rate was quoted before work began, if it was, and offer a call with the office.
The program monitors reviews and flags 1- and 2-star reviews for removal when they break Google's policies. Typical cases are a review left for the wrong plumber, one from someone you never served, or one from a competitor. A complaint about price from a real customer stays, and only Google decides what is removed.
For photos, post what a homeowner wants to see before letting a stranger in:
The list above is the trade set. The general set comes first, because Google and AI tools check it most often: Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook, HomeAdvisor and Thumbtack. Old phone numbers are the usual problem for plumbers. See what is NAP consistency for how to audit yours.
The Google Maps cheat sheet for plumbers and home service companies puts the categories, photo list and directories on two pages.
A grid of points is laid over your service area, and your position in Google Maps is recorded from each point for each keyword. The Local SEO program tracks 10 keywords on a 5-mile community grid or 20 on a 10-mile city grid.
Each term is qualified first, so the list holds only searches with room to move. The monthly report shows average rank, coverage and top 3 share, next to calls, website clicks and direction requests. For a plumber, read the emergency terms first. If the grid is strong for "plumber" and weak for "drain cleaning", the profile and site are not saying enough about drains. Our article on how to read a map grid report shows a worked example.
The program also includes local engagement signals on priority keywords, added in tiers as each set reaches the top 3.
It includes the recommendations. When a job term or a town stalls on the grid, we tell you which page to add or rewrite and what it should cover, such as a sewer line repair page or a page for the town on the far side of the county. Writing the pages is not included. That work is SEO content for plumbers, which comes with the AEO | GEO bundle and the full agency stack.
The Local SEO program starts at $850/mo per location. Details are on the Local SEO services and Packages pages, and the plumber hub lists our other services for plumbing companies. Galli Local is based in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, works with companies remotely, and is new, so there are no plumbing case studies yet. Related trades: HVAC companies and electricians.
Only if a person answers and a tech can be sent at any hour. Open businesses appear to rank better at the time of a search, but a 24-hour listing that goes to voicemail produces bad reviews.
Yes, if customers never come to your location. Google's guidelines tell service-area businesses to hide the address. You still need a real address to verify the profile, and rankings are still tied to it.
Distance is part of how Google ranks local results, so rankings fade as the searcher gets farther from your address. Area pages, reviews from those towns and ads are the ways to reach beyond that radius.
No, but many plumbers run both. The ads appear above the map and start once Google's screening is complete, while map rankings take weeks to build and cost nothing per call.
First movement on a map grid usually shows in 1 to 3 weeks, and the top 3 on competitive terms usually takes 30 to 90 days. Timing depends on your reviews, your competitors and your starting point.
