Why your Google Business Profile was suspended (and how to get it back)

Google Business Profile suspended? Learn the common causes, the documents Google accepts, and how to file a reinstatement appeal that works.

By Steven Galli · October 2026 · 5 min read

Quick summary: Google suspends Business Profiles when it believes a listing breaks its guidelines, most often because of a keyword-stuffed name, an ineligible address, or duplicate listings. To get reinstated, fix the violation first, gather official documents that prove the business exists at that address, then file one complete appeal through Google's appeals tool. You have 60 minutes to upload evidence once the form is open.

A suspended profile disappears from Google Maps and the local pack. For a service business, that can mean the phone stops ringing the same day.

Most suspensions are fixable. The businesses that stay suspended are usually the ones that appeal in a hurry before correcting the problem.

What is a Google Business Profile suspension?

A suspension is an enforcement action in which Google removes your listing from public view or removes your ability to manage it. Google rarely states the exact reason. The notice usually cites "deceptive content" or "quality issues."

Hard vs. soft suspension

A soft suspension leaves the listing live but unmanaged, which means anyone can suggest edits you cannot reject. A hard suspension removes it from search entirely.

Why was my Google Business Profile suspended?

These are the causes we see most often with local service businesses.

  • Keywords or city names added to the business name. "Smith Plumbing" is fine. "Smith Plumbing | 24/7 Emergency Plumber Dallas" is not.
  • An ineligible address. P.O. boxes, UPS Store mailboxes, and unstaffed virtual offices do not qualify.
  • A service-area business showing its home address. If customers do not visit you, the address should be hidden.
  • Duplicate profiles for the same business at the same location.
  • Several edits at once. Changing name, address, phone, and category in one sitting can trigger an automated review.
  • A manager account with other suspended listings. One flagged account can affect every profile it touches.
  • High-risk categories. Locksmiths, garage door companies, and some legal and addiction treatment categories get extra scrutiny.

A realistic example: a mobile locksmith uses a co-working space address to appear inside a larger city. A competitor reports it, Google asks for proof of a staffed office, and the profile is hard suspended.

What to do before you appeal

Do not create a new profile. A second listing counts as a duplicate and makes reinstatement harder.

  1. Read Google's Business Profile guidelines from top to bottom.
  2. Compare your profile to them line by line: name, address, category, hours, website.
  3. Fix every violation you find. If you cannot edit the profile, list the corrections in your appeal.
  4. Make sure your website, signage, and state registration all show the same business name and address.

Appeals fail most often because the owner never identified the violation. Reviewers compare the profile to the documents. If they do not match, the appeal is denied.

What documents does Google accept as proof?

Gather these before you open the appeal form. Each should show the exact business name and address used on the profile.

  • Business license or state registration (Secretary of State filing, DBA certificate)
  • Utility bill for the location: electric, water, gas, or internet
  • Tax document such as an IRS EIN letter or sales tax certificate
  • Lease or deed for the property
  • Professional license where the trade requires one
  • Photos of permanent signage, the interior, branded vehicles, and tools

For service-area businesses without a storefront, branded vehicle photos, insurance certificates, and the trade license carry the most weight.

How to submit a Google Business Profile reinstatement appeal

  1. Sign in with the Google account that owns the profile.
  2. Open the Google Business Profile appeals tool.
  3. Select the suspended profile. The tool shows which policy area Google flagged.
  4. State whether you are appealing for ten or more locations. Bulk appeals use a spreadsheet.
  5. Submit the appeal, then select Add evidence.
  6. Upload your documents. You have 60 minutes from opening the evidence form, or nothing attaches to the appeal.
  7. Write a short, factual explanation: what the business does, where it operates, and what you corrected.

Keep the explanation under 150 words. Do not argue or mention competitors. Reviewers want to confirm three things: the business is real, it is at that address, and the profile follows the rules.

Decisions often arrive within one to two weeks, though timing varies. Treat the first appeal as your best chance, because follow-up options after a denial are limited.

How to avoid another suspension

  • Use your real business name only.
  • Change one field at a time and wait a few days between major edits.
  • Keep ownership under a company email address with two-step verification.
  • Limit manager access to people you trust.
  • Check the profile weekly for user-suggested edits.

Ongoing monitoring is part of our GBP management service, including change alerts so an unwanted edit is caught the day it happens.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Google Business Profile suspension last?

It lasts until Google approves an appeal. There is no automatic expiration. With complete documentation, many profiles are restored in one to two weeks.

Will I lose my reviews if my profile is suspended?

Reviews are hidden during a hard suspension and normally return when the same profile is reinstated. They are lost if you abandon the profile and create a new one.

Can a competitor get my profile suspended?

Anyone can report a profile through Google's redressal form. Reports only stick when the profile breaks a guideline, which is why a compliant name and address is the best protection.

Should I keep running Google Ads while suspended?

Location assets and Local Services Ads tied to a suspended profile may stop serving. Standard search ads that send traffic to your website can continue and help cover the gap.
