What does New York's Rule 7.1 require of a law firm website?

Rule 7.1 covers advertising by lawyers, and a firm website is advertising. Six parts of it change how SEO work is done here.

Six requirements from New York Rule 7.1 that apply to a law firm website
RuleWhat it requiresWhere it shows up in SEO
7.1(f)The label "Attorney Advertising" on the home pageSite header or footer, landing pages
7.1(h)Name, principal law office address, and telephone numberFooter, Business Profile, every ad
7.1(e)(3)"Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome" with results, comparisons, and testimonialsCase results pages, review widgets
7.1(c)(1)Disclosure when an endorsement or testimonial is paidTestimonial pages, video
7.1(g)No meta tags or hidden code that would violate the rules if displayedTitle tags, schema, alt text
7.1(k)Keep ads three years, computer-accessed communications one year, and a website copy at launch, at each major redesign, and at least every 90 daysYour backup schedule

Three of these are easy to miss.

The hidden code rule is an SEO rule. Rule 7.1(g) reaches meta tags. A title tag or schema field that says "best injury lawyer in Brooklyn" is treated as if it were printed on the page. Write metadata to the same standard as visible copy.

Retention needs a calendar. Most firms update their site far more often than every 90 days and keep no copies. Schedule a full-site export each quarter and one before any redesign.

Specialist claims carry a disclaimer. Under Rule 7.4, a lawyer certified by an approved private organization must add that the certification "is not granted by any governmental authority". Practice-area pages should say "we handle" and not "we specialize in".

Rule 7.5 also bars practicing under a false, deceptive, or misleading domain name.

This is a summary, not legal advice. Read the current rule before you publish.

How do New York's legal markets differ?

Bar chart of 2020 census populations for New York City, Buffalo, Yonkers, Rochester, Syracuse, and Albany

New York has 62 counties and 13 judicial districts. The Supreme Court is the statewide trial court, which surprises out-of-state marketers who assume it is the top court. Each of New York City's five boroughs is its own county with its own courthouse.

  • New York City. 8,804,190 residents in 2020. "Personal injury lawyer nyc" gets about 2,400 searches a month in the United States. A firm ranks in a few neighborhoods around its office, and clients think in boroughs. Build pages by borough and by court.
  • Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany. Each is under 300,000 people and anchors its own county. One office can cover the city, and county-seat pages for nearby towns are worth writing.
  • Yonkers and the suburbs. Yonkers is the state's third-largest city at 211,569. Westchester and Long Island firms compete with city firms that advertise outward.
