What local SEO covers for law firms in Ohio

Local SEO for law firms in Ohio is four jobs done every month: managing the Google Business Profile, earning and answering reviews, cleaning up citations and directory listings, and tracking rank on a map grid. In Ohio, this page adds the local detail: the nonverifiable claims rule, the name and office address every ad needs, specialist wording, and how the three big markets differ. The method itself, including categories, review rules and the directories that matter, is on our local SEO for law firms page. The Local SEO program starts at $850/mo per location and needs a verified profile at a real address, at least 10 reviews and a 3.5-star or better rating.

What do Ohio's advertising rules require of a law firm?

Rules 7.1 to 7.4 of the Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct apply to websites, Business Profiles, and ads. We read them from the Ohio State Bar Association and a rules site, not the Supreme Court's own file, so confirm each point against the official text.

Five Ohio lawyer advertising requirements from Rules 7.1 to 7.4
RuleWhat it saysWhere it shows up in SEO
7.1No false, misleading, or nonverifiable communication. The comments treat "cut-rate", "lowest", and "discount" as misleading, along with fee comparisons you cannot substantiateHeadlines, title tags, ad copy
7.2(c)Every communication includes the name and office address of at least one responsible lawyer or law firmFooter, landing pages, Business Profile
7.2(d)No seeking work in matters the lawyer does not intend to actively handlePractice-area pages for cases you refer out
7.3(c)Written or electronic solicitations say how the lawyer learned of the person, avoid judging the merits, and carry "ADVERTISING MATERIAL" or "ADVERTISEMENT ONLY"Email and mail campaigns
7.4A lawyer may say they practice in or concentrate in particular fields. "Specialist" requires certification and the certifying organization's nameBios, schema, categories

"Nonverifiable" is the test for every superlative. "Aggressive representation", "the best trial lawyers in Cleveland", and "top-rated" all need something a reader could check. Replace them with facts: years in practice, number of trials, courts where you appear.

The office address is required content. Rule 7.2(c) asks for a name and an office address. That matches what Google wants on a Business Profile: a real, staffed office. A page for a city where you have no office should say which office handles the work.

Do not build pages for work you hand off. Rule 7.2(d) bars seeking employment in matters the lawyer does not intend to actively handle. A page targeting mass tort or truck accident searches, when every such case is referred to another firm, is a risk under that rule.

Accident mailings have their own enclosure. A solicitation sent within 30 days of an accident must include a statement titled "Understanding Your Rights". SEO is not solicitation, because the client finds you.

This is a summary, not legal advice. Read the current rule before you publish.

How do Ohio's legal markets differ?

Bar chart of 2020 census populations for Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati

Ohio has 88 counties, and state law puts a court of common pleas in each one. Three counties hold the large cities.

  • Cleveland. "Personal injury lawyer cleveland" gets about 1,200 searches a month in the United States, with an Ahrefs difficulty score of 61 out of 100. The Cuyahoga River divides the city, and clients choose a firm on their side.
  • Cincinnati. About 400 searches a month for the same phrase. The metro crosses into Kentucky and Indiana, so say which states you are admitted in.
  • Columbus. About 300 searches a month, with a difficulty score of 64. The city covers 220 square miles; a firm ranks on its own side of town.

In the other 85 counties, the county seat is the market, and a firm near the courthouse competes with a handful of others.

  5. Do location pages name the office that does the work?
