Quick summary: SEO for law firms is the work of making the whole website earn cases: practice-area pages that rank, a site Google can crawl, links from the legal community, and an intake path that turns a visit into a consultation. Local SEO is one part of it and covers the Google map. This page covers everything else.
The map work has its own page. In short: the Business Profile category, reviews and legal directory listings decide who shows in the three map results, and most small firms should fix those first. The detail is on the local SEO for law firms page. What follows assumes that work is done or under way.
Legal searches come in four kinds, and three of them land on a web page instead of a map listing.
Monthly United States search volume, from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer:
These are national totals. A small firm does not compete for "personal injury lawyer" across the country. It competes for the share of those searches made within driving distance of its office, plus the longer versions that add a town, a case type or a question. The page that wins a local version of these searches is almost always a dedicated practice-area page, not the home page.
Position matters too. First Page Sage's September 2026 click-through study found the first organic result gets 22.6% of clicks when no AI answer shows, and the tenth gets 0.5%.
A common gap on small firm sites is a single "Practice areas" page that lists ten services in a paragraph each. Google has nothing to rank for any one of them. Splitting that page is usually the first content job. How pages get planned and approved is on the SEO content for law firms page.
Schema. Schema.org has a LegalService type for law firms. It also lists an Attorney type under it, but schema.org marks Attorney as deprecated and points to LegalService. LegalService describes a business. An individual lawyer's bio page should use Person markup that points back to the firm. Mixing those up is a common error on legal sites. The LocalBusiness schema starter pack has code to adapt.
Intake tools. Many firms embed a form or scheduler from intake software such as Clio Grow or Lawmatics, or add a live chat widget. Each one is a script that loads on every page. We check three things:
Mobile speed. Someone searching after an arrest or a crash is on a phone. A page held up by a hero video or three chat scripts loses that reader before the number shows. Click-to-call belongs at the top of every practice-area page.
Old attorney pages. When a lawyer leaves, the bio is often deleted and its links are lost. Redirect it to the firm's attorney listing instead.
Law is one of the few industries where good link sources are easy to name.
We do not buy links or join link exchanges. For a law firm, a paid placement dressed up as an editorial mention is also a misleading communication risk.
Everything on the site is a communication about legal services. These points come from the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. Your state's version controls, and some states are stricter.
State versions differ. Pennsylvania's Rule 7.2, for example, bars endorsements by a celebrity or public figure and requires paid endorsements to be disclosed. This is a summary and not legal advice. A lawyer at the firm approves every page before it goes live, and your state bar's ethics line is the place for a close call.
Full SEO is part of the full agency stack, which is quoted. See packages, the national SEO services page, or go back to digital marketing for law firms.
Local SEO is the part that wins the three map results. SEO is the whole job: practice-area pages, technical health, links and the intake path, which together win the standard results under the map.
SEO content takes 3 to 6 months for steady gains. Map work moves sooner: first grid movement in 1 to 3 weeks, and the top 3 on competitive terms in 30 to 90 days.
Not first. Practice-area and case-type pages bring in consultations, so they come before posts. A post earns its place when a question has search demand and leads to a service the firm offers.
Use LegalService for the firm. Schema.org marks the older Attorney type as deprecated. Use Person markup on each lawyer's bio page.
Only if the claim can be supported. ABA Model Rule 7.1 bars false or misleading communications, and a comparison you cannot back up is hard to defend under it. Stating facts, such as years in practice and courts admitted to, is safer and more persuasive.
Claim the free profile on each major directory first. A paid upgrade is an advertising decision, not an SEO one, and should be judged by the consultations it produces.
