AEO | GEO for law firms

Quick summary: AEO | GEO for law firms is the work of getting a firm named when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews a legal question or asks who to hire. AI tools name firms they can confirm in several places, so the work is mostly bar and legal directory cleanup, schema, and pages that answer a question in the first two lines.

What do people ask AI tools about lawyers?

People bring a legal problem to an AI tool as a full question. We build a firm's tracking list from these patterns.

PatternExample question
Who to hire"Who is a good custody lawyer in [town] for a father?"
How to choose"How do I find a good lawyer for a small business dispute?"
Whether to hire at all"Do I need a lawyer for a car accident if nobody was hurt?"
Cost"How much do personal injury lawyers charge?"
Comparison"Should I hire a big firm or a solo attorney for a DUI?"
Urgency"My brother was just arrested. What do we do tonight?"
Process"What happens at a first meeting with a divorce lawyer?"
Checking a name"Is [firm name] any good?"

Some of these have measurable search demand as well. Ahrefs Keywords Explorer shows about 1,900 searches a month in the United States for "how to find a good lawyer", about 500 for "what is a contingency fee", about 300 for "do i need a lawyer for a car accident" and about 250 for "how much do personal injury lawyers charge". The versions typed into a chat tool are longer, and no keyword tool counts them.

Where do AI tools get answers about law firms?

An AI tool reads what the web says and repeats what several sources agree on. For law firms, these are the sources we audit:

  • State bar directory. The licensing record. Corrections usually have to come from the lawyer.
  • Legal directories. Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Martindale-Hubbell, Super Lawyers and Lawyers.com. Each holds a profile per attorney and often one per firm.
  • Google Business Profile and its reviews. The same listing that drives the map.
  • General listings. Bing, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and the Better Business Bureau.
  • The firm's own site. Attorney bios, practice-area pages and FAQ blocks.
  • Forums and news. Reddit threads where people ask about a legal problem, and local press that quotes a lawyer.

We do not publish a figure for how much each source counts, because no one outside the AI companies knows it and it shifts by question.

The legal-specific problem is the lawyer who moved. Directories list people, and people change firms. A partner who joined three years ago may still show at a former firm's address on four directories, with a phone number that rings someone else. An AI tool that sees two firms and two addresses for one name has a reason to leave that lawyer out.

What does our own testing show?

On October 5, 2026, Galli Local asked 10 local questions of four AI tools: ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot Search. The tools named 83 businesses in total. Of 88 question-and-business pairings, 52 were named by only one tool, and 5 were named by all four. The questions covered several industries in State College, Pennsylvania, so this is not a law firm study. It does show that the tools disagree with each other. The method is in the State College AI search study.

What makes a law firm easy for an AI tool to name?

  1. One version of each lawyer. The same name, firm, address and phone on the bar record, every legal directory and the Business Profile.
  2. Practice areas stated the same way everywhere. If the site says "family law" and Avvo says "general practice", the tools have to guess.
  3. Schema on the site. LegalService markup for the firm, with links to its official profiles, and a bio page for each attorney.
  4. Answer-first pages. A fee page that opens with how the fee works. A process page that opens with the first step.
  5. Reviews where legal clients leave them. Google first, then the legal directories that carry client reviews.

What do we do for a law firm?

The work matches our national AEO | GEO services and comes in the bundle with the Local SEO program and GBP management.

WorkWhat it means for a law firm
BaselineRun a fixed list of questions through the AI tools and record which firms are named
Advanced directory auditFind every firm and attorney listing, including ones at former firms
Duplicate consolidationMerge or remove old listings so one accurate version remains
New profilesTwo built each month, starting with missing legal directories
SchemaOrganization and LocalBusiness markup with consistent profile links
Answer-ready pagesTwo content pieces a month, approved by a lawyer at the firm
Forum consultingWhere your clients ask questions, and how to take part without being flagged as spam
Monthly AI mention reportMentions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews for the same questions

Listing fixes take 4 to 8 weeks to spread across directories. AI mentions follow over the next few months. The content pieces are described on the SEO content for law firms page.

What will we not promise or do?

  • No guaranteed mentions. AI answers change from one session to the next. We report the trend across the full question list.
  • No fake reviews. They break Google's policy and the FTC's rule on reviews, and a false review of a law firm is a false communication about a lawyer's services.
  • No seeded forum threads. A post that hides its tie to the firm is misleading.
  • No replies that reveal a client. ABA Formal Opinion 496, issued January 13, 2021, says a negative online review does not allow a lawyer to disclose confidential information in response. Replies we draft never confirm that the reviewer was a client.

Map pack or AI answer: which matters more for a law firm?

Our view: the map pack and the standard results still win buying searches, and AI answers lead question searches. Someone who types "DUI lawyer near me" at midnight picks from the map. Someone weighing a will against a trust reads AI answers and the pages they cite.

So the order depends on the practice area. Criminal defense and injury firms should put the map first, through local SEO for law firms. Estate planning, family and business firms get more from AEO | GEO, because their clients ask more questions before they call. The site work that supports both is on the SEO for law firms page, and the overview is at digital marketing for law firms.

Common questions about AEO | GEO for law firms

What is AEO | GEO for a law firm?

It is the work of getting a firm named and cited in AI answers. It covers directory cleanup, schema, answer-first pages and a monthly mention report.

Can you get our firm recommended by ChatGPT?

No one can promise that. We make the firm easier to confirm across the sources AI tools read, and we measure mentions each month on a fixed list of questions.

Which legal directories matter most for AI answers?

Start with your state bar directory, then Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Martindale-Hubbell, Super Lawyers and Lawyers.com. Matching details across all of them matters more than any single one.

How long does it take?

Listing corrections take 4 to 8 weeks to spread across directories. Changes in AI mentions usually follow over the next few months.

Should a lawyer answer legal questions on Reddit?

A lawyer can take part under a real name with general information, within the state's advertising and solicitation rules. Posting through fake accounts or hiding the firm's involvement is something we will not do.

Does AEO | GEO replace local SEO for a law firm?

No. Hire-now searches still end at the map pack. AEO | GEO covers the questions people ask before they are ready to call.
