How do car buyers find a dealer today?

  • The map pack takes the "near me" searches. Monthly United States searches, according to Ahrefs Keywords Explorer: "used cars near me" about 221,000, "car dealerships near me" about 155,000, "toyota dealer near me" about 129,000 and "buy here pay here near me" about 41,000. The first map listing takes 14.8% of clicks, according to First Page Sage (September 2026).
  • Standard results and inventory pages take the research. In the 2024 Cox Automotive Car Buyer Journey Study, buyers visited 4.4 websites on average. 78% used third-party sites and 59% used dealer sites.
  • AI answers are now part of the research. 19% of buyers used AI tools such as ChatGPT, according to Digital Dealer's January 2026 report on the 2025 edition of the same study.

The field is crowded. NADA counted 16,990 franchised dealerships in 2025. NIADA reports 38.6 million used vehicles sold through all channels in 2025, against 16.2 million new vehicles in NADA's count.

Google also ended free vehicle listings. Google's Search Central changelog shows the vehicle listing documentation was removed in September 2025. The "Vehicles for Sale" feature on Business Profiles followed in November 2025, according to SearchLab Digital. Paid vehicle ads through Merchant Center remain.

Where should a dealer start?

  1. Independent lot with few reviews. Verify the Google Business Profile at the lot and build a habit of asking on delivery day. Once you pass 10 reviews, start local SEO. The Local SEO program starts at $850/mo per location.
  2. Franchised store invisible outside its brand name. Local SEO covers the map, and SEO covers model and used-vehicle searches. Check first what your website platform and manufacturer program let an outside agency change.
  3. Ranking but not getting leads. The pages are the weak point. Look at SEO content, then AEO \| GEO.

Pricing for every package is on the packages page.

Who is this for, and who is it not for?

  • For: independent used car lots, buy here pay here lots, and single-location franchised dealers.
  • Not for: large dealer groups with in-house marketing teams, brokers with no lot, and service-only shops, which should read digital marketing for auto repair shops or browse all industries.

Common questions from dealers

What is the first thing a car dealership should fix?

The Google Business Profile comes first. "Near me" searches end on the map, so a verified profile with steady reviews does the most.

Does inventory still show on Google for free?

No. Google retired its free vehicle listings in 2025. Paid vehicle ads through Merchant Center are still offered.

Can an outside agency change a dealer website?

It depends on the platform and the manufacturer program. Some limit edits, so this gets checked for each dealer first.

How much does marketing for a dealership cost?

The Local SEO program starts at $850/mo per location. Current rates are on the packages page.

Should a dealer run ads or SEO first?

Run ads first if you need buyers this month, because ads bring leads from the day campaigns go live. Start with local SEO if you can wait 30 to 90 days for top 3 positions on competitive terms.
