Local SEO for car dealerships in Tacoma, WA
Quick summary: Tacoma dealers have a problem few cities have: the city shares its name with a pickup truck. Google reads some "Tacoma" dealer searches as truck searches and shows stores near the searcher instead of stores in Tacoma. What happens when the city and the truck share a name?
We searched "toyota dealer tacoma" on October 6, 2026, signed out. Google placed the searcher in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. It returned three map listings:

One of three listings had nothing to do with the city. Google treated the search partly as "a dealer that sells the Tacoma". For a Tacoma store, that means city signals have to be stated outright: "Tacoma, WA" or "Tacoma, Washington" in page titles, the street and neighborhood in the copy, and Pierce County named on the site.
We tried two more searches, "used cars tacoma" and "tacoma car dealerships". Google stopped our session before the listings could be read, so this page rests on one capture.
Where are the car dealers in and around Tacoma?
Both Tacoma listings in our capture were in the south half of the city, one on South Tacoma Way. The next cluster is outside the city. Wikipedia's entry on Fife describes a city of 10,999 residents, split by I-5 just east of Tacoma, made up mainly of car dealerships, warehouses and industrial sites.
Puyallup is searched by name. "Car dealerships puyallup" gets about 150 searches a month in the United States, and "used cars puyallup" about 300.
What do Tacoma car buyers search for?
Ahrefs shows "used cars tacoma" at about 900 searches a month in the United States, with a difficulty score of 3 out of 100. "Tacoma car dealerships" gets about 250 with a score of 60. "Honda dealer tacoma" and "ford dealer tacoma" get about 150 each, and "buy here pay here tacoma" about 100.
Read those numbers with care. Some share of "used cars tacoma" may be people looking for a used Tacoma truck, and Ahrefs cannot separate them.
How do Joint Base Lewis-McChord buyers search?
Joint Base Lewis-McChord is 9.1 miles south-southwest of Tacoma and has more than 45,000 service members and civilian workers, according to its Wikipedia entry, with over 29,000 family members living on and off post. Lakewood (63,612 residents) sits between the base and the city.
Military families arrive on orders and often need a car soon, with no local dealer in mind. What helps them choose:
- A page that says plainly which out-of-state paperwork you handle and which you do not.
- Recent reviews. New arrivals have no neighbors to ask.
- Accurate hours, including weekends.
Ahrefs shows no measurable volume for "car dealerships near jblm". These buyers search "near me" from Lakewood, and distance decides that. Do not advertise a military discount or special financing unless it is real and the terms are in the ad.
