Quick summary: AEO | GEO for plumbers is the work of making your shop easy for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews to find, trust and name. It comes down to matching listings on the sites those tools read, Plumber schema on your website, and pages that answer plumbing questions in the first two sentences. It supports your map pack ranking and does not replace it.
Plumbing questions fall into four groups.
Ahrefs Keywords Explorer shows about 7,900 searches a month in the United States for "how long do water heaters last", about 3,100 for "tankless vs tank water heater", about 2,900 for "how to turn off water to house" and about 1,400 for "why is my water heater leaking".
The person asking is one bad answer away from needing a plumber. If the AI answer that explains a leaking relief valve draws on your page, your name is on screen at the moment the homeowner decides this is not a do-it-yourself job.
AI tools read other sites and repeat what they find. For a plumbing company, these sources matter:
We do not publish a share of answers for each source, because it changes by tool and by month. In our State College AI search study, Galli Local asked 10 local questions of four AI tools on October 5, 2026. The tools named 83 businesses in total. Of 88 question-and-business pairings, 52 were named by only one tool, and 5 were named by all four. One listing is not enough.
One set of facts everywhere. Many plumbing companies have changed names, added "and Drain" or "and Heating", moved shops or switched to a tracking phone number. When Angi, Yelp and your website disagree about your name or number, a tool has less reason to trust any of them.
Schema that says "Plumber". Schema.org has a Plumber type under LocalBusiness. Used with your service area and hours, it states what you do and where.
Answer-first pages. A page titled "Why is my water heater leaking?" should say in the first two sentences which leaks mean a loose fitting and which mean the tank has failed. AI tools quote short, direct passages.
Reviews that name the job. A review saying "replaced our sewer line under the driveway in two days" tells a tool what you do. "Great service" does not. Reviews spread across Google, Yelp and one marketplace give more tools something to read than the same reviews in one place.
AEO | GEO is sold as a bundle with the Local SEO program and Google Business Profile management, because AI tools lean on the same listings and reviews that drive the map pack. The work runs in the order set out on the AEO | GEO services page:
Running through all of it: two new profiles built each month, two content pieces a month written answer-first (see SEO content for plumbers), Reddit and community forum consulting so you take part in local threads as yourself, and a monthly AI mention report across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews.
Listing fixes take 4 to 8 weeks to spread, and AI mentions follow over the next few months. The programs are on the packages page.
We do not promise that any AI tool will name your business. The tools change their sources without notice, and the same question can return different plumbers an hour apart.
We will not write fake reviews, pay for reviews, or post forum threads pretending to be a happy customer.
The map pack, for now. Steven Galli's view is that the map pack and standard results still win buying searches, and AI answers lead question searches.
The click figures support that order. First Page Sage's September 2026 report on Google click-through rates by ranking position found 14.8% of clicks go to the first map pack listing. The same report found 81.6% of U.S. Google searches show an AI answer, and 51% of clicks on those pages go to the sources the answer cites.
So the order for a plumbing company is: local SEO first, then AEO | GEO on top of it. The website work that supports both is on SEO for plumbers, the plumber hub compares all four services, and AEO | GEO for home services covers the trades together. To check where you stand today, use the AI visibility self-test.
AEO, answer engine optimization, is about being the source of a direct answer. GEO, generative engine optimization, is about being named inside an AI-written reply. For a plumbing company the work is the same, so we treat them as one service.
We can make your business easier for it to find and name, and we cannot promise it will. The work is fixing listings, adding schema and publishing clear answers. The monthly report shows whether mentions follow.
Not right away. If you hold the top three across your service area, the map pack is already doing its job for emergency calls. AEO | GEO is the next step when you want to be named in cost, comparison and "who should I call" questions.
It can, if the tracking number replaces your real one on directories. AI tools cross-check name, address and phone across listings, and conflicts make them less likely to name you. Keep one main number on every listing.
Yes, for the safe checks. A page that explains how to shut off the water, or what a leaking relief valve means, is the kind AI tools quote. It should also say plainly where the homeowner should stop and call.
