AEO | GEO for roofers

Quick summary: AEO | GEO for roofers is the work of getting your company named when a homeowner asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews about a roof. AI tools build those answers from directories, review sites, manufacturer listings and your own pages, so the job is to make all of those agree and to answer roofing questions plainly on your site.

What do people ask AI tools about roofing?

Roofing questions are long, anxious and full of detail. People type things into an AI tool that they would never type into a search bar. The patterns we plan for:

  1. Who is a trustworthy roofer in my town for a full replacement?
  2. Should I repair this roof or replace it? It is 18 years old and leaks at the chimney.
  3. What does a new roof cost for a 2,000 square foot house?
  4. Is a metal roof worth the extra money over architectural shingles?
  5. A roofer knocked on my door after the hailstorm. How do I check if they are legitimate?
  6. Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement, and what does the roofer do in the claim?
  7. Which roofers near me are certified by GAF or Owens Corning?
  8. What should I ask a roofer before I sign a contract?
  9. Who repairs flat commercial roofs in my area, and is TPO or EPDM better?
  10. How long does it take to replace a roof, and can it be done in winter?

Some of these also show up in Google. Ahrefs Keywords Explorer shows about 5,300 searches a month in the United States for "how long does a roof last", about 3,200 for "metal roof vs shingles" and about 700 for "does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement". The AI versions are longer and do not show in keyword tools at all.

Where do AI tools get their answers about roofers?

No AI company publishes a list, and the mix changes. What we can say is which public sources hold structured facts about roofing companies, because those are the places a tool can read:

SourceWhat it tells an AI tool about you
Google Business ProfileName, address, service area, categories, hours, review count and rating
Better Business BureauYears in business, accreditation, complaint history
Angi, Houzz, Yelp, NextdoorReviews in the homeowner's own words, project photos, neighborhood recommendations
GAF, Owens Corning and CertainTeed contractor directoriesWhich manufacturer credentials you hold
National Roofing Contractors Association and state association directoriesMembership in the trade
State licensing or registration lookupsWhether your license or registration is active, in states that issue one
Your own websiteServices, materials, towns served, warranty terms, answers to common questions
Local news and community forumsWhether anyone local talks about you

What we have measured is how little the tools agree. In our State College AI search study, Galli Local asked 10 local questions of four AI tools on October 5, 2026. The tools named 83 businesses in total. Of 88 question-and-business pairings, 52 were named by only one tool, and 5 were named by all four. Showing up in one tool tells you little about the others, which is why we report on four.

What makes a roofer easy for an AI tool to name?

  • One version of the facts. The same name, address and phone on every listing. Roofers who changed names, moved shops or bought another company often have old listings still live.
  • Credentials a machine can check. A license or registration number on the site that matches the state lookup, and manufacturer credentials that match the manufacturer's own directory.
  • Reviews that mention the job. "Replaced our shingle roof after the June hail" tells a tool far more than "great service". You cannot write reviews for customers, but you can ask them to mention what was done.
  • Answer-first pages. A page that opens with a direct answer to "how long does a roof last", using the rated life from the manufacturer's spec for the shingle you install, can be quoted. A page that opens with your company history cannot.
  • Schema. RoofingContractor and Service markup that state who you are and what you do in a form software reads without guessing.
  • A real local footprint. A street address, local project photos and years of local reviews are what separate you from a crew that arrived after the storm. AI tools can only see that difference if it is written down somewhere public.

What do we do for roofers?

AEO | GEO is sold as a bundle on top of local SEO and Google Business Profile management. It follows our AEO | GEO service: a baseline of who the tools name today, then cleanup, then build. For a roofer that means:

  • Advanced directory audit. Every listing we can find, checked against your current details.
  • Duplicate listing consolidation. Old names, old addresses and acquired companies merged or removed.
  • 2 new profiles built per month. For roofers we start with the manufacturer, association and homeowner directories you are missing.
  • Organization and LocalBusiness schema. Using the RoofingContractor type.
  • 2 content pieces per month. Answer-ready pages on the questions above. See SEO content for roofers.
  • Reddit and community forum consulting. How to take part as yourself where roofing gets discussed.
  • Monthly AI mention report. Across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews.

Listing fixes take 4 to 8 weeks to spread. AI mentions follow over the next few months. The AI visibility self-test lets you check your starting point yourself.

What will we not promise or do?

We do not promise that any AI tool will name you. Nobody outside those companies controls the answers.

We will not:

  • Write or buy reviews
  • Seed forum threads or post as fake homeowners
  • Claim manufacturer credentials you do not hold
  • Publish insurance claim promises your state does not allow. The Texas Department of Insurance, for example, states that a contractor there may not offer to waive a deductible or act as a public adjuster on a roof it is repairing.

Map pack or AI answer: which matters more for a roofer?

Steven Galli's view: the map pack and standard results still win buying searches, and AI answers lead question searches.

Roofing has both in large amounts. "Roof repair near me" is a buying search, and the map pack decides it. "Should I repair or replace an 18-year-old roof" is a question search, and an AI answer often comes first. Because a replacement buyer asks many questions before choosing a contractor, AI answers matter more to roofers than to trades where almost every job is urgent.

The order still holds. Fix the map first with local SEO, build the site with SEO, then add AEO | GEO. The overview is on digital marketing for roofers, and the wider trade view is on AEO | GEO for home services.

Questions roofers ask about AI search

Should a roofer answer insurance questions on the website?

Yes, as plain steps: what the homeowner does, what the insurer does and what the roofer does. Keep it inside your state's rules. In Texas, for example, the Department of Insurance says a contractor may not offer to waive a deductible.

Do manufacturer certifications help with AI answers?

They help when they can be checked. A credential that appears on the manufacturer's own contractor directory and on your site gives an AI tool two matching sources, which is stronger than a badge image alone.

How do I know if AI tools mention my company now?

Ask them. Type the questions a homeowner would ask about roofers in your town into several tools and note who gets named. Our monthly report does this on a fixed list of questions so you can see change over time.

Is AEO | GEO worth it for a roofer who mostly does repairs?

Less so. Urgent repair searches end in the map pack, so local SEO comes first. AEO | GEO pays off on the research questions replacement buyers ask before they pick a contractor.

How long before AI tools start naming my company?

Listing fixes take 4 to 8 weeks to spread, and AI mentions follow over the next few months.
