AEO | GEO for HVAC companies

Quick summary: AEO | GEO is the work that gets your HVAC company named and cited when a homeowner asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews a heating or cooling question. It comes down to consistent listings, the right directory profiles, schema and pages that answer the question in the first two sentences.

What do homeowners ask AI tools about heating and cooling?

HVAC questions suit AI tools well. They are long, they have several parts, and the homeowner often does not know the right term. These are the patterns we plan around, with Ahrefs search volumes where the short form of the question can be measured.

PatternExample questionSearches a month (U.S.)
Who to hire"Who should I call for furnace repair in [town]?"about 150 for "who to call for furnace repair"
How to choose"How do I choose an HVAC contractor?"about 50
System cost"How much does a new HVAC system cost?"about 1,100
Repair cost"How much does AC repair cost?"about 300
Worth it"Is a heat pump worth it?"about 250
Climate fit"Do heat pumps work in cold weather?"about 300
Comparison"Heat pump vs air conditioner"about 1,900
Lifespan"How long does a furnace last?"about 2,800
Sizing"What size AC unit do I need?"about 700
Upkeep"How often should HVAC be serviced?"about 250

The typed search numbers are small next to "ac repair near me". The real version of each question is longer and never typed the same way twice: "my 16-year-old furnace needs a new heat exchanger, should I replace it or fix it, and who near Bellefonte does that?" An AI tool answers it and may name a few companies.

Where do AI tools get their HVAC answers?

AI tools build a local answer from sources they can read and cross-check. For heating and cooling, these are the ones worth getting right:

  • Google Business Profile and Bing Places: the listings the two big search engines hold about you
  • Review and lead sites: Yelp, Angi, Thumbtack and the Better Business Bureau
  • Manufacturer dealer locators: Carrier, Trane and Lennox dealer listings tie your name to a brand you are authorized to install
  • Trade and certification directories: the ACCA contractor directory and NATE's contractor search
  • Utility and efficiency program lists: participating contractor lists, where your utility publishes one, and ENERGY STAR for the facts about equipment
  • Your own website, when the answer is written plainly and marked up
  • Community discussion: Reddit threads and neighborhood groups where homeowners name the company they used

We do not rank these sources, because the mix differs by tool and by question.

How consistent are the tools with each other?

Not very. On October 5, 2026, Galli Local asked 10 local questions of four AI tools: ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot Search. The tools named 83 businesses in total. Of 88 question-and-business pairings, 52 were named by only one tool, and 5 were named by all four. The full method is in the State College AI study.

For an HVAC owner, that means being present in one source is not enough. Each tool leans on different data, so the company with complete, matching profiles in many places has more chances to be named.

What makes an HVAC company easy to name?

SignalWhat it looks like for an HVAC company
One identity everywhereThe same name, address, phone and hours on Google, Bing, Yelp, Angi, the BBB and the dealer locator. A "Heating & Air" on one and "HVAC LLC" on another reads as two companies.
Specific servicesProfiles and pages that say "gas furnace repair, heat pump installation, ductless mini splits, boiler service", not "all your comfort needs".
Credentials stated plainlyLicense or registration number, EPA Section 608 certified technicians, NATE certifications and brands you are authorized to install, each on the site in text.
Answer-first pagesA page that answers "do heat pumps work in cold weather" in two sentences, then gives the detail for your climate.
Reviews that name the jobReviews on more than one platform that mention the service and the town.
SchemaHVACBusiness, Service and FAQPage markup so the facts can be read by a machine.

Climate is where a local contractor can beat a national site. A national article answers the heat pump question for the whole country. You can answer it for central Pennsylvania winters, or Texas summers, with the equipment you install there.

What do we do?

AEO | GEO is sold as a bundle on top of local SEO and Google Business Profile management. We start by running your priority questions through the main AI tools and recording who gets named. Then the work is:

  1. Advanced directory audit: every listing checked for name, address, phone, hours and categories.
  2. Duplicate listing consolidation: old addresses, former names and tracking numbers cleaned up.
  3. Two new profiles built per month, starting with the HVAC sources above.
  4. Organization and LocalBusiness schema, using the HVACBusiness type.
  5. Two content pieces per month, written answer-first.
  6. Reddit and community forum consulting: how to take part honestly under your own name.
  7. A monthly AI mention report across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews.

Listing fixes take 4 to 8 weeks to spread. AI mentions follow over the next few months. The service itself is described on the AEO | GEO services page, and you can test where you stand with the AI visibility self-test.

What we do not promise, and what we will not do

  • We do not promise that any AI tool will name your company. Nobody controls those answers.
  • We will not write or buy fake reviews.
  • We will not seed forum threads or post as a made-up homeowner.
  • We will not publish tax credit or rebate amounts without a current official source and a date, since those programs change often.

Map pack or AI answer: which matters more for HVAC?

The map pack, for now. Steven's view is that the map pack and standard results still win buying searches, and AI answers lead question searches. "AC repair near me" on a 95-degree day is a buying search. The homeowner taps a map listing and calls.

AI answers matter most on the replacement side: heat pump or furnace, repair or replace, what size, what it should cost. Those decisions take days and are worth far more than a repair call. So the order is map pack first through local SEO, then AEO | GEO to be present while the homeowner is still deciding.

Questions HVAC owners ask about AEO | GEO

Can we publish answers about tax credits and rebates?

Yes, with a current official source and a date on the page. The IRS instructions for Form 5695 say the energy efficient home improvement credit cannot be claimed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Utility and state rebates vary, so each answer names the program.

Do heat pump answers need to be local?

Yes. A national article answers for the whole country. Your page can answer for your climate and the equipment you install there, detail a national site does not have.

When should an HVAC company start AEO | GEO?

After the map pack is bringing repair calls, and ahead of the season you care about. Listing fixes take 4 to 8 weeks to spread and AI mentions follow over the next few months, so work started in the first heat wave lands after it.

Which directories matter most for HVAC?

Google Business Profile and Bing Places come first, then Yelp, Angi, Thumbtack and the Better Business Bureau. After those, the manufacturer dealer locator for each brand you install and any trade directory you qualify for.

Do we need a Bing Places listing?

Yes. AI tools draw on directories and data providers beyond Google, including Bing, Yelp and Foursquare. A Bing listing with an old address is one more conflict for a tool to find.
