AEO | GEO for home service companies

Quick summary: AEO | GEO is the work of getting your company named when a homeowner asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews a question about their house. For a home service company that means listings that agree with each other on every directory, schema that states which trades you do, and pages that answer repair, cost and replacement questions in the first lines. It supports the map pack. It does not replace it.

What do homeowners ask AI tools about home services?

The questions fall into four groups. The volumes are Google searches in the United States from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer. Nobody publishes counts for ChatGPT.

GroupQuestion patternMonthly U.S. searches
Diagnosis"Why is my AC not cooling?"1,500
Diagnosis"Why is my furnace blowing cold air?"1,000
Lifespan"How long does a roof last?"5,300
Lifespan"How long does a water heater last?"4,600
Comparison"Tankless vs tank water heater"3,100
Who to hire"How to find a good contractor"300
Who to hire"Who should I call for [problem] in [town]?"Too varied to measure
Urgency"My water heater is leaking, what do I do right now?"Too varied to measure

The pattern that matters for a multi-trade company is the diagnosis question. A homeowner does not always know which trade they need. A breaker that trips when the AC starts could be the electrician's job or the HVAC tech's. A company that does both trades is the honest answer to "who do I call", and very few of them say so in plain words anywhere an AI tool can read it.

Where do AI tools get their answers about home service companies?

AI tools name companies they can confirm in more than one place. For this industry the places are:

  • Google Business Profile and Bing Places. Google's AI Overviews draw on Google's own listings. In our State College study, Bing listings were a cited source for Copilot Search on several questions.
  • Home service directories. Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack and Houzz.
  • Review and reputation sites. Yelp and the Better Business Bureau. In the same study, Google's AI Overview cited Yelp for the plumber question.
  • Neighborhood sources. Nextdoor recommendations, and local threads on Reddit where people ask who to call.
  • Manufacturer dealer locators. A brand's "find a dealer" page is an independent source saying you install that equipment.
  • Your own website. The only source where you decide exactly what is said.

We have not seen a reliable public figure for how often each of these is cited for home service questions, so we do not quote one. What we measured ourselves: on October 5, 2026 we asked four AI tools 10 local questions in State College. They named 83 businesses in total. Of 88 question-and-business pairings, 52 were named by only one tool, and 5 were named by all four. Each tool leans on different sources. See the State College AI search study.

What makes a home service company easy for an AI tool to name?

SignalWhat it looks like for a home service company
Matching listingsThe same name, address and phone number on Google, Bing, Yelp, the BBB and the home service directories
Trades stated the same way"Plumbing, heating, cooling and electrical" on every profile, not plumbing on one and HVAC on another
SchemaOrganization and LocalBusiness markup with links to your official profiles
Answer-first pages"A tank water heater usually lasts..." in the first sentence, not after three paragraphs about your company
Reviews where the tools lookRecent reviews on Google, and a presence on Yelp and at least one home service directory
Plain factsHours, after-hours service, towns served, license numbers and brands installed, written as text

Multi-trade companies have a problem single-trade companies do not: they often began as one trade and added others. The old plumbing-only name is still on a dozen directories, the HVAC side was added to half of them. To an AI tool that looks like several small businesses, none of them well confirmed. Cleaning that up is usually the largest single gain.

What do we do?

The work follows the same steps as our national AEO | GEO service, applied to a home service company:

  1. Set a baseline. We run a fixed list of questions for each of your trades through the main AI tools and record who gets named today.
  2. Audit the directories. Every general, industry and local listing is found and checked, including old names and numbers.
  3. Clean up and consolidate. Duplicates are merged and outdated details corrected so one accurate version remains.
  4. Build the missing profiles. Two new profiles a month, starting with the sources AI tools cite most for home services.
  5. Add schema. Organization and LocalBusiness markup with consistent profile links.
  6. Make pages answer-ready. Two content pieces a month, with a direct first-sentence answer, numbered steps and FAQ blocks.
  7. Report monthly. Whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews name you, for which questions, next to your competitors.

The bundle also includes Reddit and community forum consulting. Listing fixes take 4 to 8 weeks to spread, and AI mentions follow over the next few months. AEO | GEO is sold as a bundle with the Local SEO program and Business Profile management. See the packages page.

Steps of AEO | GEO work for a home service company from baseline to monthly AI mention report

What do we not promise, and what will we not do?

No one can guarantee a mention in ChatGPT or an AI Overview. The tools change often and give different answers to the same question on the same day. We report trends across the full question list, never one result.

We will not:

  • Post or buy fake reviews on any platform
  • Seed forum or Nextdoor threads that pretend to be from customers
  • Create listings at addresses where you have no office
  • Claim a license, certification or dealer status you do not hold

Map pack or AI answer: which matters more for a home service company?

The map pack, for now, and by a wide margin on urgent jobs. Steven Galli's view is that the map pack and standard results still win buying searches, and AI answers lead question searches. "Emergency plumber" gets about 122,000 searches a month in the United States according to Ahrefs, and the person typing it wants a phone number, not a paragraph.

AI answers matter upstream of that call. The homeowner who asks whether to repair or replace a 15-year-old furnace is weeks from a large job, and the company named in that answer has a head start. If you live on drain calls, local SEO comes first.

Common questions about AEO | GEO for home service companies

Can you get our company recommended by ChatGPT?

Not with certainty. Nobody controls AI answers. We make your company easier to find and confirm across the sources these tools read, and we measure the result every month.

Do AI tools matter for emergency calls?

Very little so far. Urgent searches end in the map pack and Local Services Ads. AI answers matter most for diagnosis, lifespan, comparison and who-to-hire questions.

We do plumbing, HVAC and electrical. Is that a problem for AI tools?

Only if your listings disagree about it. A company described the same way everywhere is easy to name for all three. A company listed as a plumber in one place and an HVAC contractor in another is hard to confirm for either.

Do we need to pay for Angi or Thumbtack leads to be named?

No. A free, accurate, claimed profile is what gives an AI tool something to confirm.

How long does it take?

Listing fixes take 4 to 8 weeks to spread across directories. Changes in AI mentions follow over the next few months.
